Trial By Fire
02:26
|
|||
you didn’t say why you were going
you just went
and left me on my own feeling small
in an oversized apartment
now I see you on the news
an international hero
but couldn’t you have
taken me with you, though?
did you want to explore
and see what you would find?
did you mean to save the world
or just leave me behind?
I don’t want to forget you
I’m sorry I upset you
I’ll send you a smile by wire
if you survive this trial by fire
I don’t know why you did
all the things you did
but now I can’t ask…
you’re completely off the grid
I follow your story
like a curious stranger
you always seemed to love
the smell of danger
did you find your calling?
did you want to escape
if you’re checking your mail
I hope you get this tape
I don’t want to forget you
I’m sorry I upset you
I’ll send you a smile by wire
if you survive this trial by fire

I used to wake up for good reason,
but now it’s mostly habit.
Any chance to think of you
and my brain will surely grab it.
I’m not sure if it’s late or early;
it’s far too dark to see
that one hand points to twenty
and the other is just a little after three.
The house… it seems so silent.
I guess that’s how it should be.
But when you shared it with me...
I never thought it would be.
The echoes of your voice…
They haunt my memory.
My phone blinks to remind me
that the time is twenty past three.
The sound of claws on carpet,
the sound of paws in gravel
are not what have awoken me…
My brain starts to unravel.
There was a time I’d wake up
to the sounds of fear and violence
but nowadays my eyes are wide
in silence.

We Should
02:50
|
|||
seven days of summer to see seven hundred things
I can’t wait to find out what the morning brings
my mouth is dry and my eyeball stings
please wait an hour while this coffee restores my wings
seven thousand miles to be lazy somewhere new
what’s a broken tourist supposed to do?
and so I put this suggestion to you:
we should really row out to the island
this bar has a boat we can borrow
but we’ll probably sit here on the beach
and make plans for tomorrow
twenty (twenty twenty) four hours a day to fill
with new memories and new types of time to kill
I didn’t sleep and I’m feeling ill
please pass the water and the headache pills
three planes, four trains but the sky’s the same shade of blue
what’s a holidaymaker supposed to do?
and so I put this suggestion to you:
we should really row out to the island
this bar has a boat we can borrow
but we’ll probably sit here on the beach
and make plans for tomorrow
we should try to concentrate on the good times
not fill up our passports with sorrow
now lets sit on the beach
and plan to do better tomorrow

Never Knew the Guy
02:47
|
|||
the legends say he was born in a far-off land
made to leave by forces he could not understand
he was raised by a kind couple in a small town
taught him to fit in by toning his powers down
before long he could not resist the call
to solve the world’s problems, be they huge or small
I’ve been tasked with writing his biography…
I don’t know why it was they came to me
and said
“we heard you’ve seen
his laser eyes”
no! I never knew the guy!
“did you ever
see him fly?”
no! I never knew the guy!
when he wasn’t saving the world, he got in a tangle
a particularly complex love triangle
when things got too much he found it shrewd
to take a break in his fortress of solitude
he hasn’t been seen in a while
the papers said maybe he died
I guess that’s why you’re asking
but I don’t think I’m qualified…
“we heard you’ve seen
his laser eyes”
no! I never knew the guy!
“did you ever
see him fly?”
no! I never knew the guy!
“we heard he scanned you with
his x-ray eyes”
no! I never knew the guy!
“you know you two
look alike?”
that’s not true, I wear glasses!
and I never knew the guy!

Hazardous Waste
03:07
|
|||
first contact wasn’t the big thing that we thought it would be
no handshakes, no photo opportunities
just a brief worrying message from the dark side of the moon
received by every country simultaneously
“you need to go
leave this place
the whole planet’s covered in hazardous waste”
the clean-up operation started immediately
geiger counters, water samples, hazmat suits
but nothing was detected that was not really expected
we removed our masks, and changed out of our boots
weeks passed
people forgot
summer came
it got hot
but at the same time
the very next year
came the message
that we feared:
“you need to go
leave this place
the whole planet’s covered…
in hazardous waste”
and so we took our finest rocket and filled it with our finest men
and we flew it to the far side of the moon
and as they stepped onto the surface we heard the final message
as their flying saucer left us to our doom
“we need to go
leave this place
they got out
into our space
we need to go
leave this place
before we get contaminated
by their hazardous waste!”
finally
we understand
it turns out…
that it was man
the message wasn’t meant for us you see
transmitted on the wrong frequency

Fan Theory
03:35
|
|||
all the girls in the typing pool can’t wait to give their opinions
on the whispers that filter in through the executives’ minions
a memo finds its way from the mail room into a desk drawer
RE: romance blooming up on the seventeenth floor
the phone operators find their eyeballs all drawn to the door
searching for an inkling of winks as we pass in the corridor
admiringly they discuss our special flair for concealing
what they assume must be a tremendous depth of feeling
but in fact our relationship barely amounts to an ounce
of a hunch between maureen and rory down in accounts
and despite the consensus it fills me with regret
to inform you that we’ve hardly actually met
the gossip makes the day a little less dreary
but she and me, we’re merely a weak fan theory
the source of the rumours: a christmas do where I kissed her
but she’s secretly seeing her superior’s little sister
in fact we’ve only spoken once since that fateful night
when she told me to back off, and I said: “alright”.
but a love affair needs more than the combined forces
of just susan, les and paul in human resources
despite the consensus it fills me with regret
to inform you that we’ve barely actually met
the gossip makes the day a little less dreary
but she and me, we’re merely a weak fan theory
the gossip makes the day a little less dreary
but she and me, we’re merely a weak fan theory

The End
04:11
|
|||
I’ve heard it said it’s all about the journey
not to focus too much on the destination
but it’s tricky not to think about the ending
when you’re facing nuclear obliteration
so as we huddle in our shelters
and we whisper words of solace
let our voices rise together
and please join me in a chorus:
was this even a war we were capable of winning?
is this the start of the end or the end of the beginning?
sooner or later we’ll realise we can not pretend:
it’s just the end.
it’s hard to think of anything but the present
but what if, after all this pain and strife
when our molecules are all blasted together
it turns out that there really is an afterlife?
and reborn in our next lives
we all hail ouroboros
let our voices rise together
and please join me in a chorus
was this even a war we were capable of winning?
is this the start of the end or the end of the beginning?
sooner or later we’ll realise we can not pretend:
it’s just the end.
unchained from our corpses
you’ll find you can’t ignore us
so let our voices rise together
and please join me in a chorus
was this even a war we were capable of winning?
is this the start of the end or the end of the beginning?
when I look in the mirror I see a human skull grinning…
was this even a war we were capable of winning?
is this the start of the end or the end of the beginning?
sooner or later we’ll realise we can not pretend:
it’s just the end.
